Our Lady of 121st Street
Cypress College Spring 2022
Project Details
Our Lady of 121st Street is a poignant and often dark drama that brings together a group of disconnected individuals, all mourning the passing of a beloved nun who taught them in their youth. The play's narrative unfolds across three distinct locations—a church, a bar, and a funeral home.
The set was designed with these 3 distinct location as stationary units across the very wide black box space. My design treated each setting as its own distinct universe, using different methods of lighting to give a different but still natural feeling tone to each space while giving the ability to isolate each different section of the set and direct the audience's focus from one location to the next.
As an adjunct faculty designer I worked directly with the students as both the designer and master electrician. I created all paperwork, lead the student crews for hang, cabling, and focus, and programmed the show.
